The usual lines we hear from a couple making their marriage vows is found in 1 Corinthians chapter 13.
Some of us love the idea of getting married or even coupled up especially with the person we desire, but is it really love?
There are many kinds of love, but not all of them remains. There is only one kind of love that is committed and not based on emotions, because feelings fade, but true love never does. 1 Corinthians 13:8 says, “Love never ends.”
This is contrary to what pop culture thinks.
The “hugot” or “walang forever” is love based on emotions.
Do you believe in love at first sight? I don’t.
What if he or she sees another one and believes the same? That’s not REAL LOVE at all.
Speaking of REAL, some would believe its opposite. “FANTASY”, “FAIRYTALE-like ending” or “DREAM COME TRUE” as they imagine it in their minds is a distorted view of love.
When you desire someone, is it for your own gain?
Consider this situation in Genesis 34:2-4:
And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw Dinah, he seized her and lay with her and humiliated her. And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob. He loved the young woman and spoke to tenderly to her. Shechem spoke to his father Hamor saying, “Get this girl to be my wife.”
Shechem was attracted by Dinah’s outer beauty, and just like that, He made his move.
“And humiliated her…” it’s like Dinah lost part of her to that man just like that or didn’t care being humiliated just like that.
In NIV it says:
He took her and raped her. His heart was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob.
In NLT it continued:
But then he fell in love with her, and he tried to win her affection with tender words.
He took her and lay with her and violated her.His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman.
But Matthew 5:28 says:
But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Exodus 20:14 and Deuteronomy 5:18 says, “You shall not commit adultery.”
Romans 6:12 says, “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey in its lust.”
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lust. (Romans 13:14)
Strong attraction are feelings which is an act of lust.
Shechem fell in love with Dinah after he laid with her. How many of you know that REAL LOVE doesn’t require your clothes being stripped off from your body? How many of you agree that having to exert effort to win someone over is an act of lust? A total opposite to love is patient?
How many of you know that REAL LOVE is based on a godly relationship?
What happens when all the feelings of attraction and affection fade away?
You will spend your time looking for something or someone else to ignite that feeling again and the lust continues.
Make a choice today, will you continue being trapped in the sin of lust or will you break down that sin and allow God to plant a future for you?
